HERITAGE

The Herdwick breed is believe to have originated in Scandinavia, however it has been developed over centuries within the Lake District.

They are still predominantly found there, however there are also specialist flocks across the UK.

SHEEP

The Herdwick breed was established in the UK in the 12th Century. It is a hardy breed, developed for the Lake District's harsh climate. The rams are often horned.

FLEECE

The Herdwick fleece is a harsh and hard fibre, lambs have a black fleece, which goes grey as they age and grow more kemp fibres.

The undyed yarns are commonly used in carpets, the harsher fibres are often also used for insulation materials.
